Editors Letter
Welcome to another issue of Make, our twentieth issue which feels like a real achievement. While preparing to write this, we looked back and re-read our other nineteen editors’ letters. It made for interesting reading! Even in the relatively small amount of time it has taken to create the past twenty issues, our creative world has changed radically. The pandemic, political dramas, our environmental issues, the global economy and the developments in AI have and continue to be huge influences on the way we work and create in 2024. For many these are uncomfortable and unsettling times and once again we find ourselves in a time of turmoil and change. At Make, we tend to feel that one way to get through such troubling times is to fill your life with as much brightness, happiness, hope and joy as possible and so we have strived to reflect that feeling in this issue. And with that in mind, the theme of this issue is ‘Bright’.
Unsurprisingly (given the calibre of creatives that contribute to Make) this theme has inspired the unfailingly brilliant band of contributors in a variety of imaginative ways. As well as our usual collection of innovative and striking fashion and beauty stories, we chat to rising young actor Robyn Cara about her role in the Netflix comedy/drama Bodkin. We discover the work of artist Lauri Hopkins and learn about how she is redefining the use of collage in fine art. We meet the woman behind the pioneering Hungarian fashion brand Nanushka and then we travel to Costa Rica for sun drenched surfing style.
As you journey through this issue, we hope you feel inspired by the incredible images and stories featured within. As always, a huge debt of gratitude goes to our amazing collaborators and friends who have play an invaluable part in making this magazine what it is.
And thanks for taking the time to read, it’s also essential part of what we are creating!
We hope that you stay optimistic. Stay content. Stay bright!
Chloe & Ursula.
