Editors letter – The Bold issue
Bold: adjective
(of a person, action, or idea) showing a willingness to take risks; confident and courageous. “a bold attempt to solve the crisis”
Similar: intrepid, brave, valiant, undaunted, heroic, gallant, unflinching, spirited, positive, assured.
Can we be honest? We weren’t sure if we would get another issue of Make together following the global events of 2020. There were so many uncertainties and so much fear. At Make, we couldn’t be sure that we would ever even enter a photographic studio again!
A few months into lockdown we dared to contact our contributors again to see if they had the time, the desire or the resources to create content for us. It was very gratifying that the response of so many talented individuals was a rallying cry of YES!
Bold is our theme for this issue of Make. It feels appropriate in these unprecedented times and when we are continually being tested for our strength and resilience. In this, our fourteenth issue, we meet some fearless and interesting people: People like actor Gana Bayarsaikhan who tells us about life in her home in Mongolia and working with Sir Mark Rylance in her latest role. We also talk to non-binary performance artist Liz Ord about life and work and the balance of the two. Our cover star, Rose Leslie, has played some bold characters in her diverse career and we chatted to her about her upcoming part in the next Kenneth Branagh/Agatha Christie adaptation and, excitingly, her bold next role, as a parent.
As always, there is also our usual mix of fashion, art and beauty, showcasing bold and inspirational fashion and jewellery and celebrating the new season’s collections.
We are always hugely indebted to our brilliant team of collaborators who work so hard to create such incredible images and words for us, but this issue feels particularly poignant and special. We are particularly proud and in awe of the bold and beautiful work, they have created for us in spite of these strange and unusual circumstances. We hope you will love the issue too.
It goes without saying that we sincerely wish that you, and all whom you love, continue to stay safe and well and we hope we might, in some small way, encourage you to continue to be bold. After all, as they said in ancient Rome: ‘Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat’ – Fortune favours the Bold!
