We can’t quite believe it, but here is the tenth issue of Make! Now we are in double figures we wanted to choose a special theme, something close to our hearts and part of the digital ethos of the magazine, namely sustainability.
In this issue, we are pleased to say that 95% of the fashion featured has real environmental and ethical credentials. Are our fashion stories compromised in terms of style? We don’t think so. Sure, we are missing some of the ‘big name’ designers that have graced our pages in past issues. However, in truth, we simply hope that this serves to shines a light on the failings of the ‘powerhouses’ of fashion and beauty and encourage them to produce their products and designs with closer attention to ethics and sustainability. We could all start by reading the inspiring open letter in this issue by Qiulae Wong, Co-founder and Director of Product Common Objective where she outlines the startling facts surrounding the conspicuous consumption of the fashion industry and her hopes for a better fashion future.
We also talk to four important innovators, from different areas of the design world (from bras to bowls) to find out how they have built successful business from scratch, with ethical credentials the driving force of their business.
As always, we are thrilled to celebrate the work of our incredible artists. Each issue is a sum of its parts and is really nothing without the creative efforts of our contributors from across the globe, all of whom really took the sustainable theme to heart and produced some beautiful and original work for this issue.
We are really proud to champion the work and ethos of the designers who are working successfully with their companies built around well considered and ethical work practices and we hope you will enjoy learning more about how a sustainable life can still be a stylish one!
